Liyen Chong - exhibition opening

Liyen Chong is an emerging artist based in Auckland with exciting horizons in her practice. Having successfully negotiated her practice around diverse disciplines of painting, graphic design and embroidery with hair she has been working on expanding her oeuvre during her time at the McCahon House. Liyen has been exploring phenomenology, Eastern thought and its implications for her art practice in New Zealand.

Having grown up in both Malaysia and China, Liyen Chong migrated to New Zealand in her mid teens and completed her MFA in Christchurch. Chong settled in Auckland in late 2005 after travelling around the world on a scholarship provided by the University of Canterbury. Since then she has exhibited widely in New Zealand and Australia and her work is present in public collections such as the Chartwell Collection and the National Gallery of Australia.

Dasein (Being There.) opens at Page Blackie Gallery at 5:30pm, Tuesday 16 August.

Karl Maughan makes his mark on the catwalk

Karl Maughan's hyper real gardens were turned into "walking pieces of art" by New Zealand label Stolen Girlfriends Club, at Australian Fashion Week in Sydney last night.

While Karl has already collaborated on both graffiti works and sculpture, it is his first foray into the fashion world.

Travelling to Sydney to see the results of the collaboration, he described the imagery used as being "part Monet's garden in Giverny and part New Zealand garden".

Page Blackie welcomes NINA GEHL

Marcia and James are proud to welcome a new represented artist to Page Blackie Gallery.

Nina Gehl is a London-based, American artist, who has recently exhibited alongside Tracey Emin, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Patrick Hughes and many more, in London’s prestigious Shoreditch Ball.

Living and exhibiting in London, Nina’s recent work mixes the medium of oil with ash from burnt wood or cremated remains, to create portraits- either of young women or of images which relate to the origin of the ash.

Born in Buffalo, New York, she received an MA in Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art and went on to complete an Associate Research degree at City & Guilds of London Art School.

Gehl’s work has been exhibited widely throughout the US, Europe, and the UK, including private collections, and in 2008 she was selected as a finalist for the Guasch Coranty International Painting Prize in Barcelona.

Nina’s first exhibition with Page Blackie Gallery will be in mid-September this year.

Max Gimblett features at the Andy Warhol Museum

Max Gimblett has been selected to represent Buddhism in "The Word of God", opening September 17 2011, at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburg. Comprised of five solo exhibitions, each featured artist represents one of the five great religions Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Judasim and Islam.

The Museum has published the following commentary on its website:

At a time when political parties fight viciously for the higher moral ground, when controversy reigns in the building of mosques and when bigotry, abortion & same sex marriage are wedges of division in our culture there still remains room for interfaith understanding.

The Warhol Museum has in its sixteen year history, presented difficult or controversial imagery and art in order to spark community dialogue.

Jonathan Smart @ Page Blackie Gallery

In response to the situation in Christchurch, we are proud to welcome Jonathan Smart Gallery to Wellington for a relief exhibition at Page Blackie Gallery.
"Jonathan Smart @ Page Blackie" will feature work by leading New Zealand artists from Jonathan's gallery, which was tragically condemned in the Christchurch quake. The exhibition opens on Tuesday 3 May.
We are delighted to invite you to attend the opening and, most importantly, to support Jonathan and his artists through these very difficult times in Canterbury.
